God is Good: He’s Better Than You Think

God is Good: He’s Better Than You Think by Bill Johnson

Bill Johnson tackles the concept of God being good in both the Old and New Testaments.  He constantly uses bible verses to back his belief that God is Good.  Importantly Bill shares a story about his father, healing and he realises that there are just some things that are a Mystery with God, that we may not know the answers to here on earth.  Below are some of my favourite quotes and verses that Bill uses:

His Goodness – His Glory – He talks about Moses requesting to see God’s face, his glory and he gives him his goodness – pg 94

“Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Co. 1:27)

“If the glory of God contains the revelation of the goodness of God, then here is a key.  Jesus Christ dwelling in us by the Holy Spirit is what makes the revelation of His goodness known to and through us to the world around us.  And that is hope illustrated.” Pg 98

“The one with the most hope will always have the most influence.” Pg 99

“All of God’s judgements are aimed at whatever interferes with love” pg 102

“Jesus came to reveal the Father” pg 116

“The Son is the dazzling radiance of God’s splendour, the exact expression of God’s true nature—his mirror image!” part of Hebrews 1:1-3a – pg 118

“It was Jesus who taught us how to pray, “On earth as it is in heaven” (see Matt 6:10).  Yes, eternity is important.  But going to heaven is not my responsibility.  He will get me there, entirely by His grace.  My job is very specific and extremely important—bring Heaven to earth through pray and obedience.  He displayed it by giving life, breaking the powers of darkness, and restoring broken lives, hearts, and homes.” Pg155

“When I see that He did what He did as a man following His Father, then I am compelled to do whatever I need to do to follow that example.  I am no longer content to live as I am.  I will still celebrate His goodness, but now it will be from the very “trenches” that Jesus lived in.” pg 169

“Living out of passion is so much more Christ-like than merely living out of good discipline.” pg 181

“The goodness of God is the cornerstone of our theology: one that must be lived, preached, and demonstrated.  It’s all about Jesus.  He is perfect theology.” (can’t find where I go this from, if you find it let me know and I’ll update)

God is good and as a result of reading this book it started a great discussion in our car about healing.  If God is good, why is everyone not healed?  What about the pool at Bethesda?  5 different areas, lots of people, were more healed than the account in scripture??  I agree with Bill here, there are some things that we are just not going to be able to understand, that are a mystery about God.  He did however unequivocally created us, we are very good and his intentions for us with Jesus are to see the Father.  The Father loves us and gave us Jesus to save us, demonstrate how to live, love us and understand how we live as a human.

I enjoyed this book, essentially already believing what Bill was trying to say, that God is Good, however I gave this to a friend and she found it “life changing”.  If you don’t have a fundamental belief that God is Good or you have some questions then give this book ago and it may just change your entire relationship with God.
